Platelet Sequestration Patterns and Clearance Rates in Healthy Individuals

Indium-111 platelet scintigraphy is a scan that shows how quickly platelets are cleared from the blood and where in the body they are removed. It is mainly used to predict which patients with immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) are likely to respond to splenectomy. Little is known, however, about what normal results look like in healthy people, which makes ITP scans harder to interpret. This CME activity is based on a prospective study in Transfusion. Healthy adults had two indium-111 scans about two years apart, and their results were compared with those of a group of patients with ITP. The activity covers normal patterns of platelet clearance and removal, whether these stay consistent over time, and how they compare with ITP. It also considers what this means for interpreting scans, and for using the indium-111 scan beyond predicting splenectomy response.
