Hemostatic Function, Immunomodulatory Capacity and Effects of Lipemia in Cold-Stored Whole Blood

Cold-stored whole blood is increasingly used to resuscitate trauma patients with severe bleeding. Its red cell, platelet and plasma quality are well understood, but less is known about biological response modifiers (BRMs). These are substances released by cells during storage that may cause reactions in recipients. This CME activity is based on a study in Transfusion from Australian Red Cross Lifeblood. It assessed leukoreduced whole blood units over 21 days of cold storage. The activity covers how well whole blood keeps its ability to support clotting, how BRMs build up during storage, and how lipemia affects product quality. It also covers the quality control steps needed before cold-stored whole blood can be introduced.
